The forest-like absorption spectrum on the blue side of the Lyα emission line of high redshift quasars is often interpreted as the absorption of neutral hydrogen in isolated intergalactic clouds - the Lyα clouds. Simulations in this thesis show that transient random mass clumps in a diffusely distributed baryonic intergalactic medium (IGM) left over from the primordial nucleosynthesis can also produce the forest-like Lyα absorptions. Therefore, the Lyα forest could be totally caused by the diffuse IGM or could be seriously contaminated by it if both the cloud component and the diffuse component are found to exist. 6 IGM models from both the hierarchical clustering universe and the CDM universe are shown to be able to match the observation. The author discusses the observational methods for the IGM detection, the dynamical evolution of the IGM and the spatial distribution of 17 observed Lyα samples.
