A one-dimensional thermospheric/ionospheric model is used to study the effects of an influx of water on the upper atmosphere of Uranus. Two modes of influx are examined: (1) as water ice particles and (2) as water vapor. A water vapor influx of 10 exp 7 molecules/sq cm/s reproduces the observed electron density profiles very well above 3000 km. Ice particle influx, on the other hand, does not significantly affect the high region of the ionosphere, although it affects the electron densities in the low region. The results suggest that water vapor influx into the upper atmosphere may be responsible for the observed low electron densities of the Uranian ionosphere. The results also suggest that previously estimated value of meteoroid population at the outer solar system produces higher water densities than those deduced from the Voyager UVS (Ultraviolet Spectrometer) solar occultation measurement at Uranus.
