A study of three-dimensional driven reconnection in nonvanishing magnetic fields is presented. The vanishing of the velocity components perpendicular to the magnetic field, along a magnetic line causes the formation of an intense localized current density. In turn, this causes large displacements of magnetic field lines from fluid elements moving with the fluid. Fluid elements, initially connected by magnetic field lines, can become separated by a distance independent of the fluid resistivity. By projecting field lines onto planes transverse to the magnetic field, the topology of the reconnecting magnetic field can be seen to retain the essential features known from two-dimensional reconnection.
