The VLBI response to an unpolarized point source is analyzed for the first time up to the first order. The aim is to determine analytically which are the error terms affecting a VLBI measurement that cannot be factorized into two antenna contributions and, therefore, cannot be corrected by the existing hybrid mapping procedures. In the final equation up to five of such errors, defined as baseline errors, can be distinguished. The physical origin of those errors can be traced in the polarization impurities of the feeds, in the differential Doppler shift at the two antennas and in frequency and time instabilities of parts of the acquisition systems.
