The atmospheric motions of the brightest RV Tauri star, R Scuti, are studied from new high-resolution spectroscopic observations of the sodium lines (5889.95 and 5895.92 A). Both these lines show a very blueshifted component (about 56 km/s) which does not have a variable profile during at least one luminosity period (about 142 d). Only a small velocity decrease (about 2-3 km/s) was detected over 13 yr. The origin of the very blueshifted component which could be due to a shock ejection mechanism of some small amount of the high atmosphere or to an interstellar origin is discussed. These spectroscopic features are explained by the propagation of two shock waves per luminosity period within the 'sodium layer'. The observations indicate that an infalling shock is present within the sodium layer in addition to out-falling shocks. Depending on the pulsation phase, two shocks can be simultaneously propagating outward through the very extended sodium layer; these are, respectively, the fossils of the primary and secondary photospheric shocks.
