The binary system SS 433 is well known for its relativistic jets, its supercritical accretion regime and its unique spectral and photometric variability. In order to investigate the last point 344 CCD frames of SS 433 are obtained in the V, B, and U photometric bands on six nights in June 1989 at the Danish 1.5-m ESO telescope. Sub-day variabilities can be divided into two classes distinguished by their characteristic timescale: variations of approximately 10 min are quite erratic and are likely to originate in the jets, but the longer ones of about 2 h show a nearly periodic character and presumably come from an extended corona surrounding the jets. The results of photometric observations reported in the literature are analyzed. The asymmetric shape of the light curves is attributed to a disk-like outflow of matter. This is in agreement also with recent X-ray observations and provides a more coherent physical picture of the SS 433 system.
