The geographical distribution of astronomical research papers produced in the United States over about the past 70 years was determined to test the hypothesis that this science has become widely distributed over the past decades and to provide grist for speculation about the development of modern American astronomy. The hypothesis is correct, with 16 states presently supplying 90% of the research papers originating in the U. S. and published in The Astrophysical Journal, compared with 13 states in 1960, six in 1940, and three in 1920. California is the greatest single source of astronomical research produced in the U.S., using the standards adopted here. Four small- to moderate-population states (Arizona, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Colorado) presently produce about one-third of the research papers from the U.S., 50% more papers than California, although with only slightly more than half the total population. Observational and theoretical astronomy are distributed somewhat differently among the United States, although for both categories the same large number of states (16) produce 90% of the research. Production of astronomical research presently appears to be approximately in proportion to the number of American Astronomical Society members in any given state. The geographical distribution of the members of one large NASA committee is compared with the very different distribution of astronomical research.
