Rowan-Robinson et al. (1986) have found that the surface density of IRAS galaxies is 20 percent greater in the north galactic cap than in the south galactic cap, and consider the disparity to represent an anisotropy of cosmological significance, with its origin in a northern structure of characteristic dimension 50-100/h Mpc. An independent north-south comparison of IRAS galaxies, based on a program providing optical identifications for IRAS sources in selected areas of sky is presented. The disparity in surface densities is also found, but optical information shows that it is strongly concentrated in galaxies having optical, angular major axes greater than 130 arcsec, for which the median distance is about 16/h Mpc. It is concluded that the origin of the disparity is the local supercluster, rather than a structure of much larger dimensions.
