It has recently been found in the spectra of distant QSOs that there is a relative lack of Lyman-alpha absorption lines as the absorption redshift approaches the emission redshift of the QSO. The two current explanations of this lack of lines is examined: ionization by the nearby QSO and the failure of a significant fraction of clouds in occulting the continuum-emitting region. In the first case, it is concluded that QSOs are not the main contributors to the UV background. In the second approach, some fine-tuning of the cloud size (much smaller than 1 pc) is required and, in this case, any primordial origin for Ly-alpha clouds is ruled out. The possibility that clouds are small is also supported by the hypothetical presence of a very hot intergalactic medium responsible for the X-ray background.
