The degrees of participation of various types of cycles in the total population exchange between maser levels are suggested for determination of the thermodynamical type of a pumping mechanism. The type of cycle is determined by the nature of net transfer of populations in its ascendant (source of energy) and descendant (sink) links. The nature of the link is definite if the net transer caused by the processes of some sort greatly exceeds the others.
