With the use of the Monte Carlo technique it is shown that the number of
cycles which pump a cosmic maser can be very great. For example, for a
pumping mechanism of 62-61 CH3OH maser
in Ori A as many as approximately 1027 cycles are needed to
account for 50% of population transfer between the maser levels.
