It is shown that the observed Balmer line emission from Be stars cannot be accounted for by the ionized region produced by the Lyman continuum of the star (using Kurucz atmosphere calculations). The enhancement of the ionized region due to absorption of the Balmer continuum from the star is calculated and it is found that the line emission still cannot be accounted for in the later types. A source of EUV photons is needed to produce the required ionization to account for the observed line emission. These EUV photons can also account for the excess infrared emission observed in Be stars.
