Spectra with a resolution of ≡2 Å have been obtained of the QSO pair Tol 1037-2704 (zem = 2.193, mB = 17.4) and Tol 1038-2712 (zem = 2.331, mB = 17.8). These objects are separated by 17arcmin.9 on the sky and were discovered by Jakobsen and his coworkers to have extensive, possibly correlated absorption spectra. The authors confirm the existence of the four absorption systems between zabs = 1.95 and zabs = 2.14 in both QSOs. They have also found a fifth system in each spectrum, with zabs ≡ 1.90 in each case. It is shown that it is highly significant that the two QSOs have extremely rich absorption spectra confined to the same redshift range 1.88 < zabs < 2.15. The authors examine the consequences of various hypotheses for the origins of the absorption features - ejection from one or both QSOs or the effects of an intervening supercluster. They show that ejection is highly implausible on energetic grounds, and that the observations point to an elongated intervening supercluster observed along its major axis.
