A study of 9600 archival photographic plates obtained by the Sonneberg Observatory and covering six gamma-ray burst error boxes has led to the possible detection of several star-like images. Duplicate plates were not available to confirm the optical counterparts, and it is noted that duplicate synchronous plates are necessary to exclude the variety of possible plate faults. It is suggested that star-like images without duplicate plates must have brightnesses of at least 1.5 m above the background to be considered as candidates for optical counterparts.
