It has been shown that the usual method of construction of the initial mass function (IMF) involves a number of uncertainties which can essentially change the IMF slope at small masses (m < m_sun;). The influence of the mass-luminosity relation, BC-scale and luminosity function variations on the IMF form is studied. The effect of unresolved binaries is also discussed. Some quantitative estimates are made and it is shown that the slope at small masses can vary in wide range.
