The Alfvén waves produced by a tethered satellite system (TSS) are modelled within the MHD approximation. Expressions for the current, velocity, electric and magnetic fields are derived using the general formalism given by Wright and Southwood (1987) to describe Stationary Alfvénic Structures. The current closure in the Alfvén wave is found to have some novel features. The subsidiary current system that flows in a plane perpendicular to the wave structure has a quadrupolar character, in contrast to the dipolar magnetic field and flow perturbations. The topology of the perpendicular current has not been understood in previous TSS models. The worked example that the author presents compliments the work of Wright and Southwood (1987) who anticipated that the polar order of the perpendicular currents would be twice that of the magnetic field and plasma flow perturbations.
