With the advent of large-scale interferometric gravitational-wave (GW) detectors, we expect to have the first direct detection of GWs in the next decade. Many scientific payoffs will require electromagnetic identifications of the GW sources. Ensuring that these identifications occur will require major efforts. I will discuss from an observational point of view the requirements for success. Recent results will be presented on the angular resolution of a network of gravitational-wave detectors and on the potential of identifying optical counterparts using wide-field telescopes.
