The ΔS method is a means of determining the metal abundances of RR Lyrae stars and related variable stars from low-resolution spectroscopy. This approach has been applied to the measurement of metallicities of field and cluster stars in the Galaxy and in the Magellanic Clouds. This paper reviews the ΔS method, discusses its results and comments on some prospects for future work.
