NICMOS, a second generation instrument for the Hubble Space Telescope, is dedicated to astrophysical observations in the near infrared. NICMOS contains both cameras and spectrometers in order to cover a wide range of scientific objectives. The cameras aboard NICMOS will provide direct infrared images which have an order of magnitude better resolution than possible with ground based telescopes. Lack of atmospheric absorption and emission increases the wavelength coverage and greatly reduces the background relative to observations from the ground. NICMOS' cryogenic system for cooling the detectors has greater than a five-year lifetime without replenishment.
