MHD relationships at the shock discontinuity are proposed which lead to a significant improvement in the accuracy of the determination of the adiabatic exponent gamma of the plasma behind the earth's bow shock as compared with experimental results. The use of this approach indicates that, for quasi-transverse waves with beta sub 1 ranging from more than 0 to not more than 3 and M greater than 3, the plasma flow behind the shock front in the quasi-steady state is described satisfactorily by MHD equations with gamma = 5/3 and (in the 'ejection' region) with gamma approximately equal to 1.3-1.4.
