Greenstein (private communication and IAU Circular 3823, see appendix has discovered a unique, emission-line magnetic white dwarf star, GD 356, which has faint emission lines with Zeeman components displaced by about 50 A from line center. This is the highest priority target in this proposal. The interpretation of this object is still uncertain, but for virtually any reasonable model for the source of the emission lines, there should be strong and broad emission at Lyman-alpha. I also propose to obtain additional IUE observations, and analyze existing data, of several magnetic white-dwarf stars with absorption lines. Only 3 of the weak-field stars, where the spectra can be interpreted, have been observed so far with IUE. I propose to observe two more, as well as doing a reasonably detailed model-atmosphere fit to the 3 where data is already available.
