Recent ground based observations of algol binary systems have shown that two stars, AU Mon and RX Cas, exhibit long periodic term (P = 411^d and 516^d respectively) light variations outside of eclipse. We propose to examine these photometric variations in the UV and attempt to establish their origin(s). The principal star in this investigation is AU Mon. Recent high dispersion IUE observations of this star have shown that it occasionally has strong absorption lives of N V. Si IV, and C IV in its spectrum. 71e limited observations suggest that the lines re present only when the star is in the light minimum portion of the 4112 cycle. TWO low dispersion observations of AU Mon indicate that light variations are present in the UV and that they may be of larger amplitude than the visual variations. High and low resolution observations of AU Mon are proposed to explore the possible link between the high ionization absorption lines and the long period light variations. Low resolution observations of RX Cas are also proposed in order to study its photometric properties and to compare it with AU Mon. Limited observations of U Cep and lambda Tau are also planned. Voyager (912 - 1200 A) observations of AU Mon, U Cap, and lambda Tau are also planned to support the IUE data.
