We propose to use the IUE to investigate the vertical structure in the atmosphere of the chromospherically active K2V component of the Hyades eclipsing binary V471 Tauri. This eclipsing binary provides a unique opportunity to study the atmospheric structure and also to probe the scale height of possible inhomogeneities present in the atmosphere of the K2V by using the white dwarf as a beaming probe of its atmosphere. In V471 Tauri the atmospheric spectrum of the cool star will be seen in absorption against the nearly featureless continuum of the white dwarf as it moves behind the cool star preceeding and following the total occultation eclipse which lasts about 50 minutes. IUE observations made by us of the system during 1979/80 suggested the presence of chromospheric and transition region absorption lines such as OIA1300 and CIV 1500 shortly before and after primary eclipse (i.e. when the white dwarf was near the limb of the K star). Since these features were not observed again at other orbital phases, it is unlikely that they originated from the white dwarf. It is possible that the CIV feature arose as the radiation from white dwarf was absorbed by a magnetically confined "loop" structure in the atmosphere of the cool star. In this proposal we wish to test this hypothesis bv intensely observing the star when the white dwarf is near the limb of the cool star.
