The following problems are discussed, namely the limitations of the current fundamental reference system, the role of VLBI in the construction of a quasi-inertia reference system, the progress of the catalogues of radio sources in the last few years, the analysis and considerations on the error sources of the radio sources catalogues, the necessity for the construction of a synthesis catalogue, the requirement of the link between the optical catalogues, radio catalogues and space astrometric catalogue, and some preliminary considerations of the research on the celestial reference frame with the Chinese VLBI network.
