Homogeneous Mn(II) solutions that are not oversaturated with respect to MnCO 3 or Mn(OH) 2 , in the absence of catalysts, remain in the presence of dissolved oxygen unoxidized for periods in excess of seven years. Measurable oxygenation rates are observed in solutions that are oversaturated with respect to MnCO 3 or in waters containing "Mn-bacteria" or other surface catalysts.
