Through access to archived data, as well as remote and ground-based telescopes, secondary students are able to collect data and analyze light curves of eclipsing binaries. A sequence of activities designed to support and expand student understanding of astronomical research methods is presented. The activities use materials and resources that are readily available to secondary school students and teachers.
The first segment of the sequence is devoted to understanding the collecting, plotting, and analysis of light data through classroom-based models. Skills and knowledge developed during this segment are then transferred to the next activity - plotting and analyzing archived eclipsing binary data. In the final segment, students apply and extend their understanding by embarking upon their own eclipsing binary research via remote and ground-based telescopes.
