A zone of apparent depletion of moderately ionised wind absorbers has been detected by IUE around the secondary in some single-lined Wolf-Rayet spectroscopic binaries. There is a superficial analogy with the Hatchett-McCray effect predicted and observed in the spectra of massive X-ray binaries. For some WR SB1's such data may be circumstantial evidence in favour of compact secondaries.
