The variability with orbital phase of the ultraviolet spectrum of the intermediate polars 2A0526-328 (TV Col), 3A0729+103, 4U1849-31 (V1223 Sgr), H2215-086 and H2252-035 (Ao Psc) is analyzed. Intermediate polars are suggested to be close X-ray binaries with a weakly magnetized white dwarf, in which an accretion column and an accretion disk could exist. The presence of an ultraviolet orbital modulation of the continuum and emission lines is discussed in terms of an X-ray heating. Other variable contributions are also present and affect the detection of the orbital modulation.
