The dwarf nova VW Hydri has been observed simultaneously in the UV and optical at several stages of outburst. An attempt is made to model the spectrum using a steady-state model disc that radiates locally as a Kurucz atmosphere, together with an optically thin component. The spectrum on the rise is inconsistent with a steady disc, and may potentially be used to discriminate between possible outburst mechanisms.
