The IUE results for the Zeta Aur systems (including Epsilon Aur), the Algol systems and the W Ser systems (including Beta Lyr) are reviewed. In spite of the different length of the periods, the interaction of the wind from the star that is losing mass with its companion or with its surroundings produces the same spectroscopically observable effects in all these systems: high temperature plasma (NV, C IV, Si IV lines are usually present) and a clumpy medium of relatively high density (forbidden and semiforbidden lines are only exceptionally present).
