In July 2008, the International X-ray Observatory (IXO) was announced to the astronomical community. IXO is an inter-agency mission with participation from ESA, JAXA and NASA. The IXO mission will be a major facility to be considered in the 2010 Astrophysics Decadal survey that will address three timely, high priority science topics: 1) Black Holes and Matter under Extreme Conditions; 2) Galaxy Formation, Galaxy Clusters and Cosmic Feedback; and 3) Life Cycles of Matter and Energy. To address these topics the mission will provide up to a factor 100 increased sensitivity for high resolution spectroscopy. The reference mission design consists of a single mirror with an effective area of 3 sq m at 1 keV and 5 arc sec angular resolution. The instruments will include a micro-calorimeter spectrometer array, wide field and hard x-ray cameras, a grating spectrometer, plus other possible options such as high time resolution spectroscopy and an x-ray polarimeter. This presentation will summarize the current mission implementation based on NASA, ESA and JAXA design studies.
