The usual procedures for estimating upper limits to the flux of gamma-rays from suspected sources or in spectral lines are inadequate if the background flux is poorly determined. A method of correctly estimating upper limits in this case, and which is universally applicable, is described. Graphs are provided which enable upper limits to be easily estimated.
