The full MHD wave equation for radiatively damped wave propagation in a stratified magnetoatmosphere permeated by a horizontal magnetic field is derived. In the adiabatic case a discussion of the various types of singularity (critical level) is given. For an isothermal atmosphere with uniform magnetic field the damped wave equation is solved in terms of hypergeometric functions, and it is concluded that for many cases of interest the erstwhile discontinuity in the wave energy flux is considerably "smoothed out" by the damping. Substantial fluxes (≡108 erg cm-2 s-1) are found to be carried by some modes which, in the absence of critical levels, would carry no energy.
