Delta-a photometry, which had been originally designed for discriminating magnetic peculiar stars in a vs. color diagrams, is shown to separate there lambda Bootis stars in the opposite sense, i.e. by negative Delta-a-values indicating low metallicity as the m1-index of Stroemgren photometry, which however suffers from contamination through H-delta effects. Controversial lambda Bootis type assignments are discussed in connection with their Delta-a-values.
