CO J = 2-1 and J = 1-0 mapping of the Ring Nebula (NGC 6720) with 13 arcsec and 21 arcsec angular resolution, respectively, is presented. The CO emission appears to be extended over a region of 100 arcsec x 80 arcsec and it indicates that the mass of the molecular gas is 0.1 solar mass, i.e., significantly higher than the mass of the ionized gas, and several orders of magnitude higher than the mass of hot H2 as deduced from near infrared observations. The molecular gas is found to be concentrated in an expanding ring or hollow cylinder which is highly fragmented. Its 'youngness' and the moderate luminosity of its stellar progenitor during the post-AGB phase, explain why CO remains abundant in the Ring Nebula.
