Population III star formation during the dark ages shifts from mini-halos ( 1e6 Msun) cooled via molecular hydrogen to more massive halos ( 1e8 Msun) cooled via Lyman Alpha as radiative feedback progressively quenches molecular hydrogen cooling. Eventually both modes of primordial star formation are suppressed by the chemical enrichment of the IGM. We present a model based on a combination of analytical calculations and cosmological simulations to follow the Population III formation during the dark ages, their contribution to cosmic re-ionization and the transition of metal free star formation from mini-halos to higher mass halos. Finally we highlight the possibility of observing the explosion of Population III stars within Lyman Alpha cooled halos at redshift z 6 thanks to future deep all sky surveys such as LSST.
