Current conceptions of the nature and origin of comets, based on available experimental and observational data, are reviewed. The interaction of the different parts of comets with light and the solar wind is considered, and the abundances of H, C, N, O, and Si observed in comets are compared with those seen in CI chondrites and the sun. Metals, ions, and organic and inorganic compounds found in comets are discussed. Different hypotheses on comet evolution are described and related to scenarios proposed for the origin of the solar system.
