Plots of the C-27, C-28 and C-29 sterol contents of marine plankton,
higher plants, soils, and lacustrine and marine sediments form discrete
areas in a triangular diagram. Because the positions of these plots of
the various samples are relatable to biological sources, sterol analyses
may be used to define ecological systems.
