Sandage and Visvanathan have recently argued that the predominance of large bulges among S0 galaxies as opposed to normal spiral galaxies precludes their formation as stripped spirals. Modeling flat galaxies as Maclaurin spheroids, we show here that rapid mass loss (followed by violent relaxation) can lead to the puffing up of an originally flat galaxy. Hence S0 galaxies may have been formed by stripping spirals.
