Results are reported for a B-alpha line survey of compact infrared
sources that are believed to be objects in the early stages of star
formation. B-alpha radiation was detected from only one of the BN-type
objects surveyed (CRL 490), from several infrared point sources
associated with H II regions, and from four cometary nebula sources.
