The existence of a nonuniform (10 to the -31st to 10 to the -27th g/cu cm) intergalactic medium (IGM) is inferred from correlations between basic radio source structure and local galaxy density. These densities are derived from galaxy counts in the vicinity of 53 nearby radio galaxies primarily from the 3CR catalog. The procedure developed allows a crude method for estimating the IGM density in any locale. The results are consistent with radio source models which strongly interact with their environment, such as ram-confined plasmons or beams, but not ejected compact objects. The estimated mean IGM density derived from these data is less than one-tenth the critical density.
