This paper shows that the far-UV radiation (1500-3300 A) from a number of T Tauri stars observed by the ANS satellite cannot be of two-photon origin, since the observed fluxes are 3 to 15 times larger than the theoretically expected values. It is suggested that the observed radiation at wavelengths shortward of 2000 A is actually nonthermal and can be identified with transition radiation produced as a result of the electromagnetic interaction of 1.5-MeV fast electrons with the dust particles in the gas-and-dust clouds surrounding these stars. Theoretical transition-radiation spectral curves are derived for different plasma frequencies and dust particles, taking into account self-absorption in the circumstellar clouds and interstellar absorption. These curves are found to be qualitatively consistent with the UV spectral curves obtained from observations of T Tauri stars.
