We present results of a novel search for nearby stars within 25 parsecs of the Sun, utilizing distance estimates based on SuperCOSMOS plates and 2MASS photometry. Most searches for undiscovered nearby stars, including previous SuperCOSMOS-RECONS (SCR) searches, have used proper motion as the primary selection criterion. This has worked well; only one star within 10 pc -- GJ 566AB, a naked-eye G8V/K5V binary -- is moving slower than the 0.18 arcsec/yr cutoff adopted by Luyten for his Luyten Two Tenths sample. Nearly all subsequent searches have focused on more thorough sky coverage or fainter magnitude limits, but this neglects the possibility of other GJ 566-alikes that lurk nearby, undiscovered because of tiny proper motions.
Our search is unusual in that it is purely photometric, with no proper motion requirement. From our investigation of half of the southern sky, our TINYMO search yields a sample of 483 tiny proper motion objects potentially within 25 parsecs of the Sun. 77% of these have proper motions less than 0.18 arcsec/yr and 254 are new SCR discoveries, seven of which are predicted to be nearer than 10 pc. Somewhat surprising is that 12% of our sample show X-ray emission, which may indicate a nearby population of young stars. The most promising targets have been added to our long-term CTIO Parallax Investigation.
