We present first results of Spitzer spectroscopy from SINGS, the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey. Spitzer's Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) is being used to spectrally map various-sized regions centered on the nucleus, and covering star-forming rings and extra-nuclear H II regions. We highlight the powerful diagnostic capabilities made possible by the sensitivity of the IRS for local samples of low, moderate, and active star-forming galaxies, including [O IV] as a tracer of very massive stars, a new PAH feature at 17.1 μm, and molecular hydrogen lines tracing hot photo-dissociation regions. We also demonstrate the versatility of the IRS spectral mapping mode for producing spatially resolved maps tracking variations of the physical parameters of the gas, dust and stars on kpc scales.
