The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-III) MARVELS (Multi-object Apache point observatory Radial Velocity Exo-planet Large-area Survey) project will search for giant planets around a large and diverse set of host stars. Using the currently available spectrograph, up to 60 stars can be simultaneously monitored for radial velocity variations. Ultimately, the full survey will be able to monitor up to 120 stars simultaneously. This a significant increase in the number of stars that need to be analyzed over previous surveys.
The following discussion describes the ongoing effort to meet the challenges of conducting a large radial velocity survey. In particular, we will discuss efforts to characterize the radial velocity curves that will be produced by the MARVELS project. To this end, various methods for period detection and orbit fitting will be investigated including those based in periodogram and line-smoothing methods. These methods will be compared and contrasted using simulated radial velocity curves with particular interest being paid to their speed and efficiency for identifying planets with significant or large orbital eccentricities.
