The solar active region, McMath plage region No. 14943, showed enormous flare disturbances in September 1977, the commencement of the ascending phase of the present solar cycle. This paper discusses optical observation of the McMath region 14943 and gives attention to the evolution of the active center on September 13, 15, and 17, and to the development of the flares of September 16-17, 18, and 20. Several flare photographs are presented.
