This paper attempts to prove that the theory of gravitation, whether Newtonian or Einsteinian, explains the foundations of thermodynamics and the origin of energy dissipation and the arrows of time. Indirect links between the dynamics of space and thermodynamics are considered, along with a laboratory-space principle of equivalence, the 2.7-K microwave background, and the cosmological arrows of time. Differences between 'saturable' and 'unsaturable' space are distinguished, and the maximum temperature of a static universe is examined. A master time asymmetry is derived from reversible Newtonian and general-relativistic mechanics, irreversibility in gravitational-astrophysical thermodynamics is analyzed, and the origin of dissipation in Newtonian fluids is investigated. It is concluded that the expanding universe (and ultimately gravitation) is the origin of all observed irreversibilities in nature.
