A description is presented of an echellogram of Saturn which had been obtained with the echelle spectrograph on the 61-inch reflector at Agassiz Station in Harvard, Mass. The 'backward' tilt of the absorption lines in the spectra of the rings, flanking either side of the planet's spectrum, dramatically demonstrates that the rings are actually composed of particles, each moving in its own circular orbit around the planet. The planet itself rotates essentially as a solid body, this rotation shifting the absorption lines of reflected sunlight the most at the equatorial limbs of Saturn, but not at all at the center of the disk. In a practical way, the echelle design is appealing to observatories with moderate-sized telescopes (without a coude focus), because the spectrograph can be much smaller than the classical coude and thus can be used at the Cassegrain focus.
