Recent observations of neutral hydrogen bridges and tails attached to two Irregular II galaxies are believed to be crucial, suggesting that the class of these rare objects may have originated in binary gravitational encounters. In such collisions the outer parts of a normal spiral or elliptical galaxy are disrupted, but interstellar gas may fall into the nucleus, causing star formation to proceed for about 2 billion yr. The hypothesis can account for the observed size of the Irr II population, as well as colors, spectra, and the commonly observed irregular distributions of dust. The conditions for Irr II formation are suitable only in small groups of galaxies, but it is possible for the Irr II galaxies to escape to distances of about 400 kpc from the groups in which they were formed before their supply of fresh gas is completely consumed.
