The asymptotic nature of the multipole expansion for the long-range interaction of two atoms provides a convenient check on whether the multipole expansion is useful in spectral line-broadening calculations. The multipole expansion is found to be of no value for broadening by collisions with hydrogen, helium and neon atoms. The expansion is found to be useful for argon broadening and by implication for broadening by inert gases heavier than argon. There is good agreement between theory and experiment for the line width in the case of argon broadening; no such agreement is found for the line shift.
